Where You Should Have Your Portfolio
Understanding the importance of having your own platform.
Once you have a few pieces of work to start building your portfolio, you obviously need to know where you should have your portfolio online. I have seen people use Instagram, Behance, Dribbble, and other social media or design-oriented websites to host their work, but I want to encourage you to have your own platform.
Don’t use social media for your main portfolio
Social media is great for sharing your work and getting in contact with potential clients, but it shouldn’t be the main place you keep your portfolio. Yes, it’s easy to post and most of the foundation work is done for you, but the main problem remains that you don’t control it.
I will dig into this more next week, but understand that when you don’t have full control over the platform, it can change at any time. And that can immediately impact the collection of your work.
Have your own platform
So, what’s left? Where should you have your portfolio if social media isn’t a good option?
Well, what’s the opposite of having no control of the platform? Obviously, having full control of the platform!
You need to have your own website for your portfolio. This way, you get to choose what it looks like and how your portfolio is viewed. It also allows you to make your portfolio the star of the show.
By having your own platform, there aren’t anyone’s irrelevant posts, no distracting ads, and no one showing their work other than you. It’s just your portfolio presented the way you intended.
Pick a platform that will enable you to share your work without hindering you
I will admit that building your own platform will require your time and/or money, but it’s an extremely valuable investment. Use a platform that will to allow you to build your portfolio without you having to do an excessive amount of work.
Depending on your experience, you could code your own website, use WordPress (like I do), or use a website-building platform like Squarespace. Don’t let your inexperience hinder you either. If you aren’t able to build what you want, hire someone to create your website (maybe you two could work on projects together in the future!).
Picking one of those options can be difficult, but don’t get caught up with the bells and whistles that each option has to offer. Focus on these aspects when choosing your platform:
- You can get your portfolio up and running quickly,
- Edit and add more projects with ease,
- Present your portfolio the way you intended it to be seen,
- Easy-to-use navigation so your potential clients find your work effortlessly, and
- Bonus: A way to create a blog (just consider that you’re reading mine right now). Blogging is a great way to provide relevant and topical content to attract more viewers to your website who will see your portfolio.
Present your portfolio the way you want on your platform
When you’re ready to share your portfolio to start getting hired for the work you want to do, you need to have a home for your work. Although social media is a good way to reach out and get attention, it isn’t the best place where you should have your portfolio because you don’t have full control of how your work will be displayed. By building your own platform, you can present your portfolio the way you intended and make your work shine.
